Whereas food safety is a condition sine qua non, we sincerely aspire to produce meat respecting animal welfare and a sustainable environment. Food in general, and meat in particular, is a popular subject of numerous societal debates. These debates can be grouped into four major themes: animal welfare, supply chain (related issues such as traceability, transparency and product integrity), the environmental impact of meat production, and human health. At Vion, we have decided not to shy away from these debates, but to participate actively in the societal dialogue on these relevant themes. Together with our stakeholders we work on solutions for the challenges of the meat industry.
Our corporate social responsibility topics
Vion is in the middle of the supply chain and has the possibility to influence several topics substantially, such as food safety and product integrity. Other topics, such as sustainable farming and animal welfare are a common responsibility of several actors in the supply chain.
With regard to our business, and the effect of other companies in the supply chain on our business, we have developed a list of the relevant corporate social responsibility (CSR) topics for Vion. We listed 14 relevant topics: seven social topics, five environmental topics, and two economic topics. There are six topics which are the most crucial for the day-to-day success of our business:
– Food safety
– Animal welfare
– Employment and working conditions
– Sustainable farming
– Traceability and product integrity
– Fair pricing
In our CSR strategy, we give priority to these topics. To stay a successful frontrunner, we use recognised standards and methods, such as food safety standards, integrity standards, animal welfare standards, and CO2 footprint calculations.
In our annual CSR report we share our approach on all CSR topics.
In a series of blogs we will go in-depth on the topics mentioned above. What is our approach on these topics, why are these relevant for us and what are our initiatives? If you have any questions regarding our sustainability strategy, please do not hesitate to share them with us via the Forum page.
